The National Weather Service (NWS) office in Des Moines has issued a second heat advisory for Sunday from 1 p.m. to 9 p.m.
Sunday temperatures are forecast to reach the lower to mid 90s, with peak heat index values from around 103 to near 110 degrees Sunday afternoon and evening.
The combination of hot temperatures and high humidity will combine to create a situation in which heat illnesses are possible for anyone active outdoors or those susceptible to heat illnesses, such as children and the elderly.
When possible, reschedule strenuous outdoor activities to early morning or evening.
Drink plenty of fluids, stay in an air-conditioned room, stay out of the sun and check on relatives and neighbors. Know the signs and symptoms of heat exhaustion and heat
stroke. Wear light weight and loose fitting clothing when possible and drink plenty of water.
To reduce risk during outdoor work, the U.S. Occupational Safety and Health Administration recommends scheduling frequent rest breaks in shaded or air conditioned environments.
Anyone overcome by heat should be moved to a cool and shaded location. Heat stroke is an emergency. Call 9 1 1.
