Freddie Dalton, 35, of Perry was taken into custody Saturday night shortly after 8 p.m. by the Perry Police Department. He was later charged with domestic abuse assault, first-offense OWI and driving under suspension.

A Perry man was arrested Saturday night after the passenger van he was driving left the roadway at Willis Avenue and Eighth Street in Perry about 8 p.m.

A Perry man has been charged with assault and drunk driving after he was arrested in connection with a domestic disturbance about 8 p.m. Saturday in Perry.

Freddie Dalton, 35, of Perry faces charges of first-offense OWI, domestic abuse assault and driving under suspension in the incident, which began when a caller reported a disturbance at a home in Perry.

“The officers were dispatched to the residence for an assault,” said Sgt. Matt Aswegan of the Perry Police Department. “The person had left, but they got a description of the vehicle. Officers, with the assistance of the Dallas County Sheriff’s office, located the vehicle here in Perry. A traffic stop was conducted on the vehicle, and the person was taken into custody.”

Initial reports suggested Dalton was seeking to flee law enforcement in his vehicle, but Aswegan said eluding charges were not filed.

“From what I understand from the officer who was investigating it,” Aswegan said, “it initially appeared that he was attempting to flee officers, but it doesn’t sound like that ends up being the case. It took him a little bit longer to stop than would be normal. However, he was not charged with eluding.”

Aswegan said the investigation is ongoing.

“I don’t anticipate any additional charges,” he said, “but as facts start rolling in, that’s a possibility.”

Aswegan said Dalton has not been booked into the Dallas County Jail.

“We are providing him the care that he needs at this point,” he said, “and when the care is done being provided, then we’ll transport him to Dallas County Jail. As of right now, he is not in the Dallas County Jail, but he is in law enforcement custody.”
