UPDATE: Perry pedestrian tasered, arrested after resisting officers

Michael Scott Schmitz, 30, of Perry was charged with attempting to disarm a peace officer, two counts of assault on peace officers and interference with official acts after resisting arrest Early Tuesday by officers of the Perry Police Department in the 12000 block of Iowa Highway 144 (J Avenue) just south of the Dallas County-Boone County line.

A Perry man was tasered early Tuesday after police responded to the report of a suspicious person walking in the middle of First Avenue north of Perry.

Michael Scott Schmitz, 30, was arrested by officers of the Perry Police Department in the 12000 block of Iowa Highway 144 (J Avenue) just south of the Dallas County-Boone County line.

A caller reported a susicious person about 3:47 a.m., and radio traffic at about 4 a.m. indicated the officers were dealing with an unruly subject. Radio traffic later indicated the man was in handcuffs but still resistant.

“Officers arrived, and things did not go well,” said a Perry Police Department spokesperson, who did not elaborate on the circumstances of the arrest.

Schmitz was arrested on charges of attempting to disarm a peace officer, a class D felony, two counts of assault on peace officers, an aggravated misdemeanor, and interference with official acts, a simple misdemeanor.

The Dallas County Sheriff’s office responded to the incident and assisted. The Boone County Sheriff’s office was summoned but later disregarded.

The Dallas County EMS was paged in order to examine the parties for possible injuries sustained in the tussle.

Schmitz is being held in the Dallas County Jail on an $8,300 bond while awaiting an initial appearance before a Dallas County Magistrate.
