The fiery crash that injured at least five people Sunday evening occurred when a stolen pickup truck crossed the center line and struck oncoming vehicles just west of the Raccoon River on Iowa Highway 44 Sunday evening.

The collision occurred about 7:30 p.m. near the 21600 block of 240th Street between Laredo Trail and Sportsman’s Club Road when a westbound pickup truck crossed the center line and collided with two oncoming vehicles.

Iowa State Patrol Sgt. Alex Dinkla said the pickup truck was reported stolen from the Dallas Center area shortly before the wreck.

Dinkla said at least one person was trapped inside a fully engulfed vehicle. The two occupants of the stolen pickup were transported by air ambulance to Des Moines hospitals with serious to life-threatening injuries, and three victims were transported by ground EMS with minor to serious injuries.

He said the eight crash victims included adults and children. It appeared all the vehicles involved came to rest in the south ditch of Iowa Highway 44.

The accident remains under investigation, Dinkla said. He said alcohol might be a factor in the accident, but no charges have yet been filed.

The Dallas County Sheriff’s office, Adel Police Department, Adel Volunteer Fire Department, Minburn Volunteer Fire Department and Dallas Center Volunteer Fire Department also responded.

  1. Nice camera work. Which vehicle caught fire? Hopefully, it was the stolen one, not the ones with the innocent people in them. It’s 12:35 AM so there has been plenty of time, if the thieves were unhurt, for them to be in jail with a mugshot so at least they are hurt and perhaps, with luck, they are the ones with burns as well. Better them than the innocents.
