UPDATE: Suspect in custody in Marshalltown slaying

Rocky Trujillo, 20, of Marshalltown was arrested Monday on charges of first-degree murder, first-degree robbery, going armed with intent, assault with intent to inflict serious injury and trafficking in stolen weapons.

MARSHALLTOWN, Iowa — A suspect was arrested Monday night in connection with the murder of a convenience store clerk in Marshalltown Monday morning, according to a statement from the Marshalltown Police Department.

Rocky Dean Trujillo III, 20, of 707 Bromley St., Marshalltown, was charged with first-degree murder, first-degree robbery, going armed with intent, assault with intent to inflict serious injury and trafficking in stolen weapons.

Michael Ray West, 48, of Marshalltown was working at the Casey’s store at 111 N. Third Ave. when he was shot and killed Monday shortly after 3 a.m., according to police.

A search warrant was executed at Trujillo’s residence on Bromley Street in Marshalltown prior to his arrest Monday night, police said.

Trujillo is held without bond in the Marshall County Jail in advance of an initial appearance in Marshall County District Court.

Trujillo was convicted of public intoxication in March 2018 in Marshall County District Court. He was convicted of public intoxication in September 2018 in Tama County District Court. He was convicted of public intoxication in December 2018 in Marshall County District Court, and he was convicted of public intoxication in August 2019 in Marshall County District Court.

*A criminal charge is merely an accusation, and the defendant is innocent until and unless proven guilty.
