A Wilton man was injured Tuesday afternoon when his pickup truck malfunctioned and struck a power pole on First Avenue in north Perry.

Jason Daniel Shoultz, 48, of 313 Cypress St., Wilton, was traveling in a 2004 Ford F-250 Super Duty in the 12000 block of J Avenue about 1 p.m. “when he believes his car experienced a mechanical failure,” according to a report issued Wednesday by the Dallas County Sheriff’s office.

Shoultz lost control of the vehicle, which hit the power pole and then overturned, coming to rest in a field on the west side of J Avenue just north of the city limits of Perry.

The power pole, which stood on the west side of J Avenue just inside the city limits, was sheared off by the impact and caught fire. The Perry Volunteer Fire Department responded and extinguished the blaze.

Shoultz was taken to Dallas County Hospital by Dallas County EMS, according to the sheriff’s office. Brandy Johnson of Muscatine said in a Facebook post that Shoultz “has a broken collar bone, bruising and is sore” and “will be having surgery on Friday.”

The Perry Police Department and Dallas County Sheriff’s office also responded.

Damage to Shoultz’s vehicle was estimated at $5,000, and damage to the power pole was estimated at $10,000. Shoultz was issued a citation for driving under suspension.
