An Illinois man and a Wisconsin man were arrested Thursday night for marijuana possession as they sped through Dallas County on U.S. Interstate 80.

Alex B. Plant, 24, of 415 Chestnut Ridge, Spring Grove, Illinois, was charged with first-offense possession of a controlled substance-marijuana, speeding and failure to provide proof of financial liability.

Jake Tyler Englebert, 26, of 2019 E. Washington Ave., Madison, Wisconsin, was charged with third or subsequent offense possession of a controlled substance-marijuana and possession of drug paraphernalia.

The incident began about 10:15 p.m. Thursday near the 105 mile marker of U.S. Interstate 80, where a Dallas County Deputy Sheriff observed a 2013 Volkswagen Tiguan with Wisconsin plates allegedly traveling at 83 mph in a 70 mph speed zone.

According to court records, the deputy initiated a traffic stop and “could smell the odor of burnt and raw marijuana coming from inside of the vehicle” when he made contact with the driver, Plant.

The deputy also allegedly observed “a small red canister in the center console of the vehicle” that the deputy recognized from “training and experience to be a marijuana canister from a dispensary.”

A probable-cause search of the vehicle followed, disclosing several “packages, canisters and bags, all containing a green leafy substance” that “field tested positive for marijuana.”

Plant was held in the Dallas County Jail on a $1,000 cash or surety bond. He is scheduled for arraignment Aug. 13 in Dallas County District Court.

Englebert was held in the Dallas County Hail on a $2,000 cash or surety bond. He is scheduled for arraignment Aug. 13 in Dallas County District Court.

Englebert was convicted of possession of THC in 2013 and in 2015 Door County Wisconsin.
