The American Legion Post 85 Hall at 1324 First Ave. has been offered to the city of Perry as a donation.

The American Legion Post 85 neon sign, dark from 1972 until its restoration in 2014, has been removed from the hall.

The American Legion Sixth District authorities, on behalf of Perry’s local legionnaires, have offered to donate to the city of Perry the American Legion Post 85 hall at 1324 First Ave.

The Perry City Council will consider the offer at Tuesday night’s regular meeting.

Perry City Administrator Sven Peterson and Sixth District Vice Commander and Executive Director of the Department of Iowa American Legion Auxiliary Crystal Wright have discussed options for disposition of the Post 85 hall, which was built in 1938.

The veterans and members of the post recently decided to donate the property to the city of Perry, and the resolution to come before the city council Tuesday would accept the donation of the real estate contingent upon a clear opinion of title.

The resolution would also guarantee the city’s placement of a memorial plaque at the site, stating the building was donated on behalf of the veterans and members of the American Legion Post 85.

The Perry American Legion Post 85 was founded in 1946 and dissolved about 2018. The post’s final commander was Nathan Hoffman and the chaplain was Ron Leber.

Minburn’s American Legion Osborn Post 99 has reached out to members of the former Perry post.
