Perry senior captains Marcus Meri (84), Jacob Thompson (22), Kade VanKirk (2) and Eli Saemisch (27) come to the sideline after the coin toss last Friday at Dewey Field.

A long and trying football season ended for Perry last Friday with a 35-13 loss to Humboldt at Dewey Field. Although the Bluejays were winless on the season, there were still plenty of highlights along the way, and Friday’s contest was no exception.

Thanks go to Perry assistant coach Matt Hardy for supplying video clips throughout the season, and thanks to our readers/viewers for making these weekly snippets from the Perry games a popular stop on ThePerryNews.com.

Senior Gisaveri Niyibizi (29) started the game off on the right foot (literally) by blasting the opening kickoff into the end zone for a touchback.

Humboldt quarterback Drew Thomas (18) spins away from Bluejay senior Tyler Soll (67) only to be pulled down by a quartet of seniors including Eli Saemisch (27), Tanner Darr (53), Nic Fellom (26) and Solomon Pierce (83).

Senior Kade VanKirk (2) intercepts a Thomas pass and returns his theft 19 yards.

Bluejay defensive back Brandon Juarez (15) knocks away a potential touchdown pass, with Mana Martinez (1) almost recovering the tipped ball.

Perry quarterback Ryan Rathje escapes pressure, rolls right and finds Jacob Thompson (22) down the far sideline for a gain of 14 yards.

Saemisch (27) takes a Rathje handoff and runs between the blocks of Joe Olvera (72), Kevin Lopez (75) and Soll (67), with center Gil Garcia (79) and wide outs Taviar Lucas (13) and Marcus Meri (84) also making good blocks on the play, which went for 13 yards.

Rathje (4) puts a perfectly-placed pass over the linebackers and into the leaping hands of Pierce (83), who hangs on despite a big hit for a touchdown late in the second quarter.

Blocks from right tackle J.R. McCord (66), Saemisch (27) and Adan Medina (35) help spring Lucas (13), with a downfield block from Marcus Meri (84) allowing for a pick up of 12 yards on a jet sweep.

Rathje (4) connects with Thompson (22) for nine yards and a key first down.

Rathje (4) goes to the well once again (and why not?) as he finds Pierce (83) free behind the linebackers for a nine-yard scoring strike.

Senior defensive tackle Olvera (72) makes an impressive individual play by spinning out of a double-team block to crush Thomas (18), who tried to step into what he had hoped would be a hole in the defensive line.

Medina (35) comes up with an interception on an overthrown pass and heads downfield.
