W-G slot back Race Brant prepares to haul in a swing pass during last Friday's game with visiting Van Meter.

Last Friday’s loss to Van Meter, while certainly not helping, did not end the playoff chances for host Woodward-Granger, as the Hawks control their own destiny tonight when they visit Des Moines Christian.

With thanks to assistant coach Derek Wilkins, here are a few highlights from last Friday’s Class 1A District 8 game between the Bulldogs and the Hawks.
—————————

Bulldog tailback Carson Rhodes (7) breaks free up the middle for what looked to be a long gain. Rhodes runs through the tackle of Johnnie Morgan (13), who managed to slow up the Bulldog runner long enough for John Stucker (12) and Austin Scharlau (24) to converge. Stucker stripped the ball, with Joe Sturgeon (61) landing on the pigskin.

W-G tailback Tanner Vermaas (28) takes a handoff from Brendan Bird (14) on a counter play. Solid blocks at the line of scrimmage from Hunter Vermaas (52) and Brody Easter (71) spring the junior, with Scharlau (24) adding a downfield block. Vermaas (28) eventually puts his head down and drags Van Meter’s Ben Trent (5) seven yards for a gain of 14 yards.

Rhodes (7) is stopped for a short gain by Nick Musich (55) and Tanner Vermaas (28).

Tanner Vermaas (28) runs around left end after a lead block from fullback Josh Saak (27) clears the way. Teammate Race Brant (20) looks to provide an escort, but Vermaas was ruled to have stepped out of bounds just past the 40-yard line for a gain of 16 yards.
