Woodward-Granger tailback Tanner Vermaas breaks free along the sideline on this second quarter play against visiting Martensdale-St. Marys in week one action August 28. Vermaas had 100 yards rushing last Friday against I-35.

TRURO — Interstate-35 scored a baseball-like 8-2 win over Woodward-Granger last Friday in the Class 1A District 8 opener for both.

A final score does not always tell the whole story, as numerous fine plays were made by both teams. Seen here are a few of the highlights for the Hawks, with thanks to assistant coach Derek Wilkins.

————————-

Hawk linebacker Austin Scharlau (24) drops a Roadrunner tailback behind the line of scrimmage. W-G had numerous tackles for loss in the contest.

I-35 quarterback Jaylan White (6) is flushed outside by pressure from Joe Sturgeon (61), with Tanner Vermaas (28) tracking White down for a three-yard loss.

Nick Musich (55) attacks on an inside blitz, with defensive tackle Drew Jacobson (58) cleaning up the play for a loss of three yards.

Musich (55) and Hunter Vermaas (52) combine to drop White for negative yardage.

Unfortunately for the Hawks, Roadrunner punter Garrett George did exactly the right thing on this play, booting the ball out of the back of the end zone and surrendering two points for a safety rather than risk possible W-G touchdown off the botched snap.

Race Brant (20) and Scharlau (24) combine for an open-field tackle that stopped a swing pass from gaining yardage.

Brant runs the wildcat. The play features a fake handoff to Tanner Vermaas (28), with Brant running around the left end to gain 16 yards, a pick-up made possible by an excellent seal-block from Scharlau (24).

Tanner Vermaas runs through a crease created by the blocks fullback Josh Saak (27), left guard James Barger (62) and left tackle Drew Jacobson (58), with downfield blocks from Brant (20) and Johnnie Morgan (13) allowing for a gain of 15 yards.

Fullback Saak (27) leads the way for Vermaas (28) through the line for a burst of 13 yards on this second-and-nine play.

Woodward-Granger will host Panorama Friday in Class 1A District 8 action. Kickoff at Hawk Stadium is set for 7 p.m.
