In an apparent case of COVID-induced stress, a West Des Moines man was arrested Saturday morning after a domestic disturbance.

Craig Alan Kern, 49, of 6565 Wistful Vista Dr., West Des Moines, was charged with first-offense domestic abuse assault-injury or mental illness.

According to court records, Kern and his female victim had “a verbal argument regarding finances and employment due to COVID-19,” during which Kern allegedly “began yelling” and “got angry and admitted to overturning furniture.”

Responding officers of the West Des Moines Police Department found evidence “that a reclining chair was thrown across the living room” and a “bed and a potted plant stand were also overturned.”

According to court records, Kern “was scratched on the face and neck” when the victim sought to defend herself as Kern allegedly “shoved” her.

Kern is held in the Dallas County Jail on a $1,000 cash or surety bond. He is scheduled for a preliminary hearing May 27 in Dallas County District Court.

*A criminal charge is merely an accusation, and the defendant is presumed innocent until and unless proven guilty.
