ADEL — Dallas County Auditor and Commissioner of Elections Julia Helm has reminded voters that Friday, Sept. 1 is the deadline to pre-register for the Sept. 12 school elections.

The Auditor’s office will be open from 8 a.m. to 5 p.m. on Friday for the voter pre-registration deadline. Voters can still register after the Sept. 1 deadline, Helm said, but they will need more identification.

Voters who vote absentee at the auditor’s office after the Sept. 1 deadline or who plan to register at their polling locations on election day will need to show both proof of residency and proof of identity. Examples are given below.

Proof of residency must be shown with hard copies only. Electronic copies are not acceptable. Proof of residency can be accomplished with:

  • Property tax statement
  • Utility bill
  • Bank statement
  • Paycheck
  • Other government document

Acceptable proofs of identification must contain a photo and include:

  • Iowa driver’s license
  • U.S. military identification
  • Out-of-state driver’s license
  • Employer–issued identification
  • Non-driver identification card
  • Student identification form an Iowa high school or college
  • U.S. passport

All forms of photo identification must be current, valid and contain an expiration date or list “none” as the expiration date.

Absentee voting began Aug. 21 and will continue through the Sept. 12 election day at the Dallas County Auditor’s office. Absentee ballots may be cast during normal business hours, 8 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. Monday through Friday, at 210 N. 10th St. in Adel.

Helm also encourages voters to confirm their voting locations prior to election day. Voters can verify their polling locations by visiting the Iowa Secretary of State’s website or by visiting the Dallas County Auditor’s website or calling the auditor’s office at 515-993-6914.
