W-G baseball opens season with win over visiting Webster City

GRANGER — Alex Bice and Worth Henry combined to limit visiting Webster City to four hits while striking out 10 in helping guide Woodward-Granger’s baseball team to a 13-7 victory in the season opener for both teams Wednesday.

Bice toed the rubber first, throwing 4-1/3 innings. He allowed two hits and walked three batters while striking out seven. The Lynx scored six runs off Bice, but three were unearned.

Henry relieved, tossing the final 2-2/3 frames. He fanned three, allowed two hits and yielded one run.

Webster City grabbed a 2-0 lead in their first at-bat, with W-G scoring once in the bottom of the first. Five Hawk runs in the second and two in the third offset a Lynx run in the third as the score went to 8-3 in favor of the hosts entering the fourth frame.

The home team crossed the plate three times in the fourth and twice in the fifth after three visitor runs in the top of the fifth. Leading 13-6, W-G allowed a single run in the top of the seventh before ending the contest with a comfortable margin of victory.

Joe Rhodes had a double, a base hit and three RBIs, with Hunter Pifer tallying two RBIs while smacking a single and scoring once. Trevor Simmons, Bryce Achenbach, Reese Jamison and Jay Dorenkamp also had single for the hosts.

Achenbach and Jamison each scored three times and Dorenkamp and Grell twice, with Henry and Brandon Worley both touching the plate once. Achenbach and Grell stole two bases apiece, with Dorenkamp also swiping a bag.

W-G will host Earlham for a WCAC varsity doubleheader tonight, with the first game beginning at 5 p.m. WCV visits W-G Tuesday, with the Hawks traveling to Interstate-35 for a WCAC twinbill May 30 before visiting Clarke May 31.
