W-G boys win, girls place sixth at Panorama

PANORA — The 4×400 is considered by many the most exciting race at a high school track meet, and holds the honor of being the final event.

At Tuesday’s Kip Janvrin Invitational, Greene County’s boys had 113 points and the W-G boys 110 entering the penultimate relay. Ian Thompson, Marcus McConahay, Austin Scharlau and Chandler Cavanaugh came up big for the Hawks, winning in 3 minutes, 46.93 seconds, and when the Rams finished sixth, W-G had won the meet, 120-114.

AC/GC was third with 101 points, with host Panorama (97), Ogden (73), Iowa Christian Academy (47) and Glidden-Ralston (34) completing the boys field.

The girls team title went to AC/GC (133), with Panorama (125.5) second. Madrid (119) was third, with Greene County (66.5), Ogden (54), W-G (54), G-R (46) and ICA (9) also in action.

The Hawks showed their strength in the seven relays, winning three, placing second second three times and third once.

The 4×200 of McConahay, Thompson, Cavanaugh and Josh Saak won in 1:38.85, with Thompson, Jack Grell, Cody Garland and Bryce Achenbach winning the 4×800 in 9:06.61.

McConahay, Cavanaugh, Payton Tague and Brendan Bird were second in the 4×100 (47.57), with the same foursome second in the sprint medley (1:42.53) while J.P. Nixon, Kaya Bowlsby, Tae Calderon and Tague placed second in the shuttle hurdle (1:11.45), with Saak, Scharlau, Bowlsby and Reese Jamison third in the distance medley (4:18.38).

Tague was second (1:01.16) and Nixon third (21.83) in the 400 low hurdles, with Nick Moser sixth (21.83) in the 110 high hurdles.

Garland crossed third (59.18) and Cale Pritchett fourth (1:00.00) in the 400, with Grell sixth (5:24.36) in the 1600.

Achenbach won the long jump with a flight of 18 feet, 7 inches, with Pritchett clearing 5;6 for third in the high jump. Alex Kirton had a shove of 38’5 for third in the shot put, with Bird second and Brody Easter fourth, in 122′ and 103’7, respectively, in the discus.

The Hawk girls placed sixth in two field events, with Emma Buckman tossing the discus 85;5 while Natalie Helbing flopped over the bar at 4’6.

Emma Drake won the 800 in 2:35.54, with teammate Kaitlyn Peters fourth int 2:42.7 while Anna Tague crossed fourth in the 400 in 1:07.22.

Drake, Peters, Tague and Helbling teamed to win the 4×800 in 10:58.26, with Drake, Tague, Peters and Mae Anderson third in the 4×400 in 4:34.88.

Kaitlyn Bandstra, Maddi Danti, and Chloe and Savannah David were fourth in the shuttle hurdle relay in 1:24.35, with Savannah David having placed fifth, in 1:21.81, in the 400 low hurdles.

The distance medley foursome of Bandstra, Helbling, Anderson and Regan Kaufman placed fifth in 5:29.42, with Tague, Drake, Anderson and Bandstra sixth in the sprint medley in 2:09.9 while Chloe and Savannah David were joined by Quinn Kaufman and Alyssa Bice in finishing sixth in the 4×100 on a clocking of 1:00.36.

W-G returns to action tomorrow when they host the Hugh Cavanaugh Invitational at Hawk Stadium.
