W-G cross country runs in pair of meets

The Woodward-Granger boys had their season end Monday with a loss to Interstate-35.

ADEL — The Woodward-Granger harriers were in action Monday at the ADM Invite, four days after running in the Panorama Invitational.

The W-G boys were eighth Monday out of 10 teams in the varsity race with 227 points. North Polk (30), ADM (50), and Des Moines Christian (52) were 1-2-3 in the team standings.

ADM’s Nate Mueller won the event in 16 minutes, 45 seconds, with DMC’s Carson Houg (16:51) and North Polk’s Zach Sporaa (16:54) finishing 1-2.

Carsten Wright shined for the Hawks by speeding to 20th overall in 19:25, with Xavier Ibarra 42nd in 22:14. Dillon Limoges (50th, 23:01), Riece Graham (55th, 23:17), and Elijah Bell (60th, 24:10) also scored for W-G, with Kainen Fuson (62nd, 24:49) and Kurt Crouse (63rd, 24:53) also running the course.

Some of the placings in the girls varsity race were unofficial, as several runners ran the incorrect route. As posted, ADM 959), DC-G (65), and DMC (73) were 1-2-3, with W-G seventh of eight teams at 213. Four others teams had runners in action, but not enough to generate a team score.

Geneva Timmerman of ADM won in 19:23, with Van Meter’s Clare Kelly (21:15) and Mary Kelly (21:20) placing 2-3.

Libby Grell led W-G by placing 38th in 25:44, with Sydney Grell 41st in 27:17, and Makenzie Dresback 42nd in 27:21. Katie Grell (45th, 28:00.8) and Kaitlyn Smith (47th, 30:31) also scored, with Marissa Trees (50th, 33:31) competing as well.

Junior varsity teams also ran for W-G. The Hawk boys were represented by Joel Harney (23:48), Tjaden Smeltzer (23:59), Sterling Parkinson (24:31), and Josh Hultman (31;47). W-G does not have a JV girls team.

Middle school harriers run a two-mile course, and W-G had full teams in action.

Cale Leighton (34th, 14:36), Grant Polito (42nd, 15:37), Casey Fisher (47th, 16:14), Wiley Sharr (59th, 18:16) and Sidney Trees (66th, 20:38) ran for the W-G boys. Making the circuit for the W-G MS girls were were Ella Fleshner (7th, 15:56), Jaidyn Achenbach (43rd, 16:06), Zoey Osmundson (44th, 16:39), Grace Sharr (50th, 17:56) and Chloe Creger (53rd, 18:34). Also in action were Taryn Wright (50th, 19:10) and Riley McCaulley (60th, 20:43).

PANORAMA INVITATIONAL
at Panora, Sept. 17
Both Hawk varsity teams competed Thursday in Panora.

Class 1A top-ranked and defending state champion Madrid won the boys race with 60 points, with 1A No. 2 Earlham close behind at 67 while 2A No. 8 DMC was third at 87. W-G placed 15th out of 19 teams with 474 points, with two other schools also having runners in action.

Madrid’s Jason Renze (16:40) and Clay Pehl (16:41) took the top two spots, with Brett McGee of Tri-Center third in 16:50.

Wright (38th, 19:16), Ibarra (94th, 21:41) and Bell (107th, 22:27) paced the Hawks, with Fuson (117th, 22:58) and Limoges (118th, 22:59) also scoring. Crouse (124th, 23:20) and Joel Harney (125th, 23:23) also ran for W-G.

Host and 2A No. 7 Panorama won the girls side with 59 points, with 1A No. 10 AC/GC (95) second and 1A No. 1 Van Meter (100) third. W-G (383) was 16th of 17, with seven other teams have partial rosters in action.

Van Meter’s Clare Kelly (20:34) topped Panorama’s Ella Waddle (20:54) for lead girls honors, with Clarinda’s Mayson Hartley third at 20:58.

The first Hawk girl to finish was Libby Grell (47th, 24:46), with Sydney Grell (74th, 26:46), Katie Grell (80th, 27:13), Dresback (90th, 28:04) and Smith (92nd, 28:17) scoring for the varsity as well. Madisyn Mann (104th, 33:36) ran for W-G as well.

W-G will continue their recent busy stretch with a visit to Roland-Story Thursday.
