HUXLEY — Woodward-Granger participated Monday in all Class B divisions at the 41st Mike Carr Invitational, with Ballard the host school.

The W-G boys were 12th in their team competition with 321 points, with the Hawk girls 11th at 296. North Polk (45) and Solon (53) were the top two boys finishers, with Solon (36) and Ballard (60) 1-2 in the girls competition.

Aaron Fynaardt and Carson Houg of Des Moines Christian were the first two boys finishers, crossing in 16 minutes, 16 seconds and 16:31, respectively.

Dylan Bird (70th, 23:52), Aiden Topolavich (74th, 24:02), and Grant Polito (75th, 24:12) wrapped the scoring quintet, with Tjaden Smeltzer (78th, 24:45) and Sterling Parkinson (80th, 25:04) also in action.

Solon’s Paitlyn Noe (19:33) and Atlantic’s Ava Rush (20:27) were the lead placers in the girls race.

Libby Grell (45th, 25:54) led W-G, with Kenzie Dresback (58th, 27:16), Katie Grell (62nd, 27:47), Sydney Grell (64th, 28:07), and Kaitlyn Smith (67th, 29:27) accounting for the varsity scoring. Also running for the Hawk girls were Maddy Mann (68th, 29:53), and Elena Bortot (70th, 30:38).

A total of 81 boys and 73 girls ran in their respective varsity races, with 239 boys and 179 girls running in separate junior varsity events.

Joel Harney (24:05), Lucas Hansen (26:50), and Sidney Trees (31:21) ran for the W-G boys while Marissa Trees (34:55) was the sole Hawk JV girl in action.

Two-mile middle school races were also held, with ADM (54) and DC-G (56) the top girls teams while W-G (201) was seventh in the 13-team field. A total of 185 harriers were on the course.

Emerson McDermott (12:31) and Piper McDermott (12:51) of DC-G were 1-2, but W-G’s Eva Fleshner rose up to finish third in 12:55.

Zoey Osmundson (16:01) and Jaidyn Achenbach (16:04) were 31-34 for W-G, with Talia Wright (18:13) and Grace Sharr (19:08) competing the circuit as well.

W-G had only four boys run in the middle school race and thus did not generate a team score. Norwalk (64) and Gilbert (78) were 1-2. A huge field of 223 runners set off at the gun.

Cael Leighton (13:36), Alex Younts (16:01), Wiley Sharr (20:31) and Noah Faust (28:00) ran for the Hawks.

Every Hawk middle school runner, on both squads, is an eighth-grader save Faust.
