DES MOINES — “It was amazing, just like I knew it would be.”

Those were the comments of Woodward-Granger junior Kaitlyn Peters Thursday after she was joined by freshmen Emma Drake and Natalie Helbling and sophomore Anna Tague for the Class 2A 4×800 at the State Track Meet.

Standing on the infield of Drake Stadium, Peters said she running on the famed blue oval “has been a goal forever.”

The Hawk quartet entered the meet seeded 23rd, which is where they finished. They had qualified in 10 minutes, 35.41 seconds, but posted a 10:33.45 Thursday.

The W-G 4×800 team of, from left, Emma Drake, Kaitlyn Peters, Anna Tague and Natalie Helbling competed at the State Track Meet Thursday.

Drake will return to Drake Saturday when she competes, at 10:30 a.m. in the 800. She is seeded 11th with an entry time of 2:26.48.

While some of the 4×800 teams were aiming for medal-winning performances, the Hawk ladies said they simply wanted to run their best and enjoy the experience.

Anyone seeing the smiles the foursome were wearing after their relay would have had no doubt they achieved both goals.
