The W-G girls swatted six doubles to help capture a 9-7 WCC win over host Van Meter in eight innings Tuesday.

STUART — Riley Jamison scattered five hits and escaped danger in the bottom of the seventh as Woodward-Granger knocked off West Central Valley, 6-2, in the softball season and West Central Conference opener for both squads Wednesday.

Ahead by four, W-G found themselves in trouble as WCV loaded the bags with one down in their final at-bat. Jamison then did what she had done throughout the game — induce ground balls — as consecutive ground outs kept the score unchanged and ended the contest.

“She (Jamison) might have been a little nervous at first, but she was really strong for us tonight,” W-G head coach Noah Bean said. “She was able to avoid a big inning and did a great job of keeping the ball low in the zone and forcing ground balls.”

Jamison walked three and struck out seven in earning the win from the ring. Of the 14 other Wildcat outs, only one was on a fly ball.

WCV led, 1-0, after one frame, but a Kendra Husman double, a three-base error with Annie Webb batting tied the score. Webb then raced home when the WCV pitcher, thinking the inning was over after a strikeout, trotted toward the dugout as the throw back from the catcher went into open space, allowing an alert Webb to cross the plate.

The hosts scored in their half of the second to tie the game, but a Miranda Aunspach base hit, and stolen base, and singles from Jamison, Husman and Webb brought two runs home, with Anna Tague, running for Jamison, scoring after Aunspach.

A Bree Lesch base hit and RBI-double from Jamison made int 5-2 in the fifth, with Meagan Bandstra singling, stealing second and then racing all the way home on an errant throw capping the scoring.

W-G hosts Des Moines Christian today, and will then play three games at the Centerville Tournament Saturday. Up first is a battle with Wayne (Corydon) at 12 p.m., with games against Pella and Centerville following at 2 p.m. and 4 p.m. respectively.
