Woodward-Granger senior-to-be Meagan Bandstra (at right, in catcher's gear) is organizing an All-Area Alumni game/fundraiser, set for July 18, as her senior project.

WOODWARD — Bailey Richards cranked a solo home run in the top of the seventh for what looked, for the moment, to be the dramatic play in a 6-5 WCC win for Madrid at W-G Monday.

The Hawks had something else in mind, as a four-hit barrage in the bottom of the seventh stunned the Tigers, 7-6, lifting W-G to 5-7 overall and 4-1 in WCC play. The loss dropped Madrid to 5-5 overall and 4-3 in conference action.

W-G had raced to a 3-0 lead in the first inning. A lead-off triple from Miranda Aunspach was followed by an otufield error for a 1-0 Hawk lead, with a Riley Jamison RBI-single and another Tiger error later in the frame pushing the lead to 3-0.

Madrid steadily fought back, scoring once in the second and twice in the third to tie the game, then taking a 5-3 lead with two tallies in the top of the fourth.

Aunspach smacked a two-run double in the home half of the fourth to tie the battle at 5-all, where it stood until Richards launched her solo shot in the seventh, setting the stage for the late dramatics.

Aunspach was right in the mix again, starting the fateful rally with her second double and third extra-base hit of the contest. She moved up a base when Bree Lesch beat out a bunt single, with Lesch then stealing second base.

Jamison’s second RBI-single of the game plated Aunspach, with Lesch scoring the winning run when Kendra Husmann lined a double to the fence in right center.

“The kids have faith that until the last out is made we are still in the game,” Hawk head coach Noah Bean said. “They know anyone on the team can put pressure on the defense and that any of them is capable of coming through.”

Jamison allowed six runs (three earned) on six hits in collecting the win from the ring. She walked two batters and struck out one.

W-G visits Panorama tonight before hosting Earlham Thursday.
