WOODWARD — Senior running back Tanner Vermaas and junior offensive lineman Joe Sturgeon were both voted onto the Class 1A All-State Third Team by the Iowa Newspaper Association sportswriters Sunday.
Vermaas accounted for 70 percent of the rushing yards gained by the Hawks (3-6) this season, finishing with 1,367 yards on 221 carries, an average of 6.2 yards per rush. The 5-10, 198 hard-charger scored 21 of W-G’s 24 rushing touchdowns. He finishes his career with 3,062 yards and 34 TDs on 536 carries.
Sturgeon was a key factor in plowing the road for Vermaas. His efforts in the trenches helped W-G rush for 1,952 yards and 24 TDs while also accumulating 825 yards and six TDs through the air.
