W-G harriers run in WCAC meet Thursday

PANORA — The Woodward-Granger harriers were in action at the WCAC meet Thursday, with the event hosted by Panorama at the Par 3 Golf Course.

Panorama won the girls side with 50 points, with Van Meter second at 72, Des Moines Christian third at 76 and AC/GC fourth at 79. Fifth place went to Earlham (93), with Pleasantville (187), Madrid (196), West Central Valley (233), Ogden (236), and Woodward-Granger (263) completing the field. Panorama is ranked fifth in Class 3A and DMC 11th, with Van Meter fifth in 1A, AC/GC 7th, and Earlham 13th.

Defending state champ and top-ranked Madrid won the boys race with 41 points, with 2A No. 7 DMC the runner-up at 47. Class 1A No. 2 Earlham was third at 51, with 1A No. 13 AC/GC fourth at 109 and third-ranked Ogden fifth at 124. Sixth went to Interstate-35 (183), with Van Meter (215), Woodward Academy (266), Pleasantville (266), W-G (284) and WCV (287) competing as well.

Clare Kelly of Van Meter and Lily Dixon on Earlham, both sophomores, were 1-2 in the girls race in 20 minutes, 2 seconds and 20:27, with AC/GC senior Rylee Sloss third in 20:29.

Freshman Libby and juniors Sydney and Katie Grell were the top three for W-G, finishing 39th, 50th and 52nd overall in 24:40, 26:28, and 26:35, respectively. Makenzie Dresback (58th, 27:29), and Kaitlyn Smith (64th, 29:43) also scored, with Madisyn Mann (65th, 30:30), and Marissa Trees (66th, 31:59) on the course as well.

Seniors Jason Renze and Clay Pehl were 1-2 for Madrid, in 16:28 and 16:29, in the boys race, with senior Carson Houg of DMC third in 16:39.

W-G was led by Carsten Wright, who crossed 37th in 19:42. Xavier Ibarra was 49th in 21:12, and Healey Hill 64th in 22:50; with Dillon Limoges (66th, 23:00), and Kurt Crouse (68th, 23:39) also scoring points. Running for the Hawk varsity as well were Sterling Parkinson (71st, 24:03), and Lucas Hansen (72nd, 24:04).

Middle school races are two-miles long. Earlham won the girls side with 48 points, with W-G fifth of sixth at 97. DMC won the boys race with 28 points, with W-G not having the five runners needed for a team total.

MacKenzie Harger of Earlham won the girls competition in 13:24, with W-G’s Eva Fleshner second overall in 14:07.

Zoey Osmundson (18th, 16:19), Jaidyn Achenbach (19th, 16:20), Grace Sharr (28th, 17:22), and Chloe Creger (30th, 17:34) also scored for the Hawks. Talia Wright (32nd, 17:44) and Rylee Woodard (34th, 18:05) were in action as well, with Riley McCaulley (19:18) also running the circuit. All are in grade seven.

Cael Leighton (23rd, 14:33), Grant Polito (38th, 15:10), Casey Foster (51st, 16:26), and Wiley Sharr (59th, 17:41) ran for the W-G MS boys. Polito and Foster and in eighth grade, Leighton and Sharr in seventh.

W-G will return to Panora Thursday for a State Qualifying Meet.
