W-G netters host McCune Invite, play in WCAC tourney

WOODWARD, IA — The regular season ended with a flurry for the Woodward-Granger volleyball team, as the Hawk netters played in a combined eight matches last week.

W-G played Tuesday and Thursday at the WCAC tournament, then hosted a large field Saturday for the annual Norm McCune Memorial Invitational.

W-G (9-18) defeated Panorama, 21-11, 21-10 and Colfax-Mingo, 21-16, 21-11, Saturday. The Hawks fell to Grandview Christian, 21-14, 21-14, and to AC/GC, 21-15, 21-9, as well as to Roland-Story, 21-13 and 21-18.

Individual statistics from R-S and Panorama were not available, but in the three other McCune matches Anna Weaver had 30 assists, with Cela Hill and Bella McDivitt having two apiece and Cadence Klocke, McKenna Carroll, Grace Deputy and Audrey Simmons one each.

The Hawks were without starter Lindsay Mescher, with Deputy (12) and Simmons (11) forced to take extra responsibility along the front row. Emma Klocke had six kills and Weaver five, with Carroll having four, Hill two and Cadence Klocke one.

McDivitt led the squad with 19 digs, with Weaver having 18, Simmons 15, Deputy 13, Carroll nine, Hill six and Emma Klocke four.

In the three recorded games W-G served 85-of-93 (91 percent) with 12 ace serves.

Weaver was 25-25-5, Deputy 22-26-4 and Carroll 14-14-2. Simmons was 4-5-1, Emma Klocke 4-4-1, Hill 8-of-8, McDivitt 6-of-9, and Jocelyn Bowlsby 2-of-4.

The WCAC tourney was hosted by Des Moines Christian. Play started Tuesday and continued Thursday.

W-G opened with a 25-20, 25-17 win over Earlham on day one, then fell to Van Meter, 25-11, 25-15 and Pleasantville, 21-25, 25-21, and 15-9.

Weaver had 41 assists, McDivitt and Cadence Klocke two apiece and Mescher and Deputy one each. Mescher (17), Deputy (15) and Simmons (13) led the Hawks in kills. Emma Klocke had five kills, Cadence Klocke two and McDivitt and Weaver one each.

Libero player McDivitt led the defense with 21 digs, with Weaver having 18, Simmons 16 and Mescher 15. Carroll had seven digs, Hill and Emma Klocke six each, Deputy four and Cadence Klocke one.

Dputy had four blocks, Cadence Klocke 2.5 and Simmons 1.5 above the net.

W-G sparkled behind the service line, connecting on 126-of-131 (96 percent) with 17 aces.

Carroll was 36-37-8 and Weaver 24-26-6, with Mescher 20-20-5 and Deputy 17-19-1. McDivitt finished 13-of-13, Hill 8-of-8, Emma Klocke 7-of-7 and Bowlsby 1-of-1.

W-G opens postseason play by hosting Ogden Monday at 7 p.m. with the winner earning a Wednesday trip to Dike-New Hartford.
