W-G netters rallying to aid Houston school, families in wake of hurricane

The Texas school where former Hawk netter Kate Phillips Fleming teaches suffered major flood damage recently, with the families of the student body greatly affected.

WOODWARD — The Woodward-Granger volleyball team is asking everyone to join them in a “Kind State of Mind” Tuesday as they raise funds for Lutheran South Academy in Houston, Texas.

W-G alumna and former Hawk standout netter Kate Phillips Fleming teaches at the school, which suffered considerable flood damage during Hurricane Harvey. Most, if not all, of the families sending students to the school have endured massive loss of property and belongings and are in need of the charitable kindness of others.

All proceeds from Tuesday’s West Central Activities Conference match with Panorama will be donated to relief efforts directly relating to the school and families.

A silent auction will be held, with a Gift Card basket, a Camping basket, a House Divided basket and Pamper Yourself basket up for bid. Other items may be added.

A breakfast-themed dinner will be held from 4:45-6:45 p.m. in the cafeteria. Catered by Kue’d Smokehouse, a freewill offering will be accepted. Suggested donations are $8 for adults and $6 for children.

A table in the gym will accept pledges for ace serves by the W-G varsity in their match, in which the donor pledges a set amount for each Hawk ace.

W-G players have been busy putting several items together, including a Kindness Wall. T-shirts are also for sale.

Tuesday’s action begins with the freshman match at 5 p.m. and the junior varsity at 6 p.m. The varsity match is slated to begin at approximately 7 p.m.
