OGDEN — Spencer Hanson yielded an unearned run on four hits while striking out nine as Class 2A No. 7 Woodward-Granger improved to 19-0 with a 5-1 WCAC win over Ogden Monday.
The victory carried additional significance, as is marked the 100th career victory for head coach Eric Evans, who assumed the mantle in 2011. The Hawks were just 7-15 in his first campaign and slowly climbed over the .500 mark before exploding this season, with Evans now 100-82 overall.
W-G, now 12-0 in WCAC play, plated two runs in the top of the fourth, and, after Ogden (12-7, 8-4) scored once in the bottom of the frame, added three more runs of their own in the fifth to cap the scoring.
Reese Jamison had two singles and drove in three runs, with Hanson adding two base hits and a RBI, with Marcus McConahay driving in a run with a single. Brady Aunspach and Cole Theisen each hit doubles, with McConahay and Austin Scharlau each scoring twice while Bryce Achenbach also crossed the plate.
Jacob Craven yielded five runs (three of them unearned) on seven hits and two walks while striking out six for the Bulldogs.
Craven had two singles, knocking in Jaden Bell with the second of his hits. Jade Thompson and Chad Meier also had base hits for the hosts.
W-G hosts Des Moines Christian tonight and West Central Valley Thursday for a WCAC varsity twinbill that will start at 5 p.m. The Hawks will conclude a busy week with a non-conference visit to Winterset Friday.
