A medical emergency at the boys basketball practice Wednesday has resulted in a W-G student being Life-flighted to a Des Moines hospital.

TREYNOR — With the postponement of one Class 2A state qualifying meet Thursday to Friday, the Woodward-Granger track teams remain in limbo concerning the at-large fate of the both the boys and girls 4×800 teams.

Both foursomes placed third Thursday at Treynor, with each hoping to seize one of eight at-large times available. The Hawk boys quartet of Johnnie Morgan, Kaleb Noel, Ian Thompson and Cole Ashman finished in 8 minutes, 30.93 seconds, with the girls unit of Abby Musser, Katelyn Peters, Tori Manning and Maddie Anderson crossing in 10:27.15. As of 10 p.m. Friday the news of whether either or both had earned a spot on the blue oval at Drake Stadium was still unknown.

What was assured after competition ended Thursday was that the boys 1600 medley relay squad of Chandler Cavanaugh, Tanner Vermaas, Payton Tague and Cole Ashman had punched their ticket to state thanks to a runner-up clocking of 3:44.52.

Musser guaranteed herself of appearances in two events after the senior placed second in both the 100 (15.94) and 400 (1:06.57) hurdles.

Although not advancing, several W-G athletes and relays had strong outings after a long bus trip west.

Noel was fourth for the W-G boys in the 400 hurdles (57.06) and joined Morgan, Vermaas and Ashman in placing fifth in the 4×400 in 3:35.84.

Harrison Miller, J.P. Nixon, Drew Jacosbon and Tague were eighth in the shuttle hurdle in 1:09.18, with Cavanaugh, Jacobson, Tague and Michael Connor eighth in the 4×100 in 50.17 while Connor’s spin of 126 feet, 6 inches earned the senior sixth place in the discus.

Four Hawk girls relay teams placed eighth, including the 4×200 (2:04.41) and 4×400 (4:42.69), with Josie Baumgartner, Alyssa Bice, Mary Hansen and Kendra Husman running the former while Peters and Anderson joined Baumgartner and Tori Manning for the later.

Savannah David, Nicole Johnson, Breanna Blair and Jenna McCarthy ran the shuttle hurdle (1:27.03), with Husman, Manning, Baumgartner and Anderson running in the sprint medley (2:06.24).

Musser added the only field event points for the Hawk girls after leaping to sixth place in the long jump with a flight of 15’6.
