W-G volleyball wins five of last six regular season matches

WOODWARD — A 3-1 win over Van Meter Thursday was followed by wins in 4-of-5 matches at the Norm McCune Invitational Saturday to lift the Woodward-Granger volleyball team to a 21-10 final regular season record.

The Hawks finished 9-1 in WCAC play, with the league title going to Des Moines Christian (23-7, 10-0).

Thursday’s win over Van Meter came on scores of 25-18, 25-19, 21-25 and 26-24.

Elly Polich had 10 kills and 23 assists and Emma Drake 10 kills and 16 assists while Anna Tague had nine kills and 31 digs. Alissa Smeltzer had seven kills and Ashlyn Soelberg 32 digs, with the team combing for six assisted and two solo blocks. The Hawks served 91-of-96 with five aces.

W-G reached the title game of the McCune Invite by dispatching East Union (21-13 and 21-3), Grandview Christian (21-8 and 21-9), South Hardin (21-14, 21-16) and Panorama (21-16 and 21-11).

Roland-Story claimed the championship, recovering from a 30-28 W-G win in the first set with a 25-15 win in the second set and a narrow 16-14 victory in the third.

Tague had 27 combined kills in Saturday’s five matches, with Drake adding 17, Polich and Smeltzer 16 apiece and Katelyn Scharlau and Natalie Weaver 12 each. Soelberg and Brayten Ashman contributed one kill apiece.

Polich distributed 46 assists and Drake 38. Katelyn Bandstra made five assists, Smeltzer three and Scharlau, Soelberg, Tague and Weaver two each. Tague’s 42 digs led the team, with Soelberg providing 33, Bandstra 26 and Polich 21. Drake had nine digs, Weaver seven, Scharlau six and Smeltzer five.

Scharlau had 3.5 blocks at the net, Drake and Smeltzer 1.5 apiece, Weaver one and Tague .5 blocks.

W-G served an outstanding 222-of-231 (96 percent) with 47 ace serves in the five matches. Tague led the all-around excellent effort, finishing 51-51-6, with Soelberg 38-39-8.

Drake was 42-44-8, Polich 35-39-10, and Smeltzer 12-13-4. Scharlau finished 19-19-4, Bandstra 13-14-3 and Weaver 12-12-1.

Woodward-Granger hosts Colfax-Mingo tonight in a Class 2A Region 4 first round contest. The winner advances to face host South Hamilton Oct. 22.
