Woodward-Granger wrestlers lift dual team record to 11-1

W-G's Aaron Sperling needed just 25 seconds to pin Colfax-Mingo's Xavier Cronin in the Field Invite's 170-pound bracket Saturday.

GUTHRIE CENTER — Wins against all three of their opponents Tuesday at a Guthrie Center quadrangular raised the Woodward-Granger dual team wrestling record to an impressive 11-1 for the season.

W-G easily dispatched Van Meter, 66-18, and scored a comfortable 54-26 win against Audubon. The host Tigers provided the toughest challenge, but W-G prevailed, 46-33.

Ty Turner (113 pounds), Race Brant (152) and Tanner Vermaas (182) were all 3-0 for the Hawks, with each winning once by forfeit. Josh Saak (138) was 3-0 with two wins by forfeit, with Cole Carmen (132) finishing 3-0 in zero seconds, as all three wins were by forfeit.

Finishing 2-1 for W-G with one mat win and one forfeit were Hunter Pierce (106), Austin Scharlau (160), Aaron Sperling (170) and Thomas Govig (220). Ryley Saxton (126) and Jordan Pierce (145) were both 1-2 with a contested win while Colt Palmer (120), Griffen Gibbons (195) and Jacob Kepford (285) were all 1-2, with each of their respective wins coming via forfeit.

Turner pinned Cade Costlow (VM) in 3 minutes, 26 seconds and Zachery Fees (GC) in 3:03 while Brant nailed Colton Golwitzer (VM) in 3:48 and Jacob Soll (AUD) in 4:59. Vermaas had pins of 2:54 against Derek Golwitzer of Van Meter (2:54) and of 3:45 over Michel Rudolph of Audubon.

Saak had an 8-0 major decision over his Guthrie Center opponent (name n/a) while Hunter Pierce pinned Alex Tuma (VM) in 1:07, Scharlau pinned Colby Grove (GC) in 2 minutes flat, Sperling nailed Noah Hale (VM) in 1:18 and Govig nailed Tyler Erdman (VM) in 2:36.

Saxton’s win was a pin, in 34 seconds, of Audubon’s Westly Borkowski while Pierce pinned Van Meter’s Jeremy Frame in 4:39.

W-G was to have visited Ogden tonight (Dec. 10), but that meet has been postponed and may end up being cancelled. The Hawks will travel to Ogden Saturday for the Bulldog Duals, with action beginning at 9 a.m.
