WOODWARD — Four Hawks won their weight division and three others finished as a runner-up as Woodward-Granger won the team title at their own Dennis Field Invitational for the second consecutive season Saturday.
W-G’s seven total finalists helped the team score 180 points, easily outdistancing second-place North Polk, who earned 146.5 points. Martensdale-St. Marys was third at 107, SE Warren/Melcher-Dallas fourth at 106 and Roland-Story fifth at 91 with Coon Rapids-Bayard (69), West Des Moines Valley (68) and Colfax-Mingo (65) also in action.
Top-ranked junior Cody Fisher led the way for the hosts by winning the 220-pound class with three pins. Heavyweight Tyler Lawrenson had three pins en route to his title, with Cale Pritchett scoring five pins while battling through a heavy field to win the 170-pound crown while Gabe Yingst won a decision and scored a pin to place first at 160.
W-G was 2-2-2 in the three lightest classes, with Joel Harney 1-1 with a pin at 106, Aidan Honkomp 2-1 with two pins at 113 and Matthew while 2-1 with a decision and a pin at 120.
Jayden Dorenkamp placed third at 138 by finishing 1-2 with a pin while Kade Polich was 1-2 with a pin to place third at 182. Dustin Harney (145) was 2-2 with a decision and a pin to finish fourth, with Jon McKeever (152) 2-2 with two pins in ending up fifth.
Corbyn Atwell was fifth at 126 and Nathaniel Rosen sixth at 195, though neither recorded a win in their brackets.
W-G left the 132-pound bracket open.
The Hawks return to action Tuesday when they join Ogden and Perry for a quadrangular at Montezuma. W-G will compete Saturday in the Webster City Invitational.
