W-G wrestlers win Field Invite for fifth consecutive year

WOODWARD, Iowa — Good things, can, apparently, come in fives.

The Woodward-Granger wrestlers made it five consecutive team championships at the Dennis Field Invitational Saturday.

W-G topped the 10-team event with 204.5 points, with Roland-Story second at 172 and Martensdale-St. Marys third at 106. SE Warren/Melcher-Dallas placed fourth with 78.5 points, with Colfax-Mingo (75.5) fifth and Collins-Maxwell (75) sixth. Des Moines North/Hoover and Saydel tied for seventh with 72 points apiece, with Baxter (63) and Coon Rapids-Bayard (27) also in action.

Alex Saxton won the 106-pound division for W-G with pins in 53, 44 and 47 seconds, respectively, while Jayden Flugge-Smith claimed top honors at 132 pounds with pins in 2 minutes, 44 seconds, 27 ticks and 4:30. Also first was 120-pounder Holden Heard, who finished all five of his matches with victories by pin.

Earning runner-up points were Dustin Harney at 160, who finished 1-1 overall, and James Dorrian at 126, who was 3-1 with a trio of pins.

Jackson Potter was 4-1 with three pins and a 7-1 decision to place second at 170, with Alex Evans 2-1 with two pins second for the Hawks in the heavyweight class.

Brayden Simons was 3-2 with two pins and win via technical fall to place third at 152, with Kolby Fogarty third at 182 with a 2-2 mark while Dylan Major was third at 220 with a pin but then a pair of losses due to injury default.

Tjaden Smeltzer finished fourth at 138 with a 2-3 tally that included a pair of pins while Oliver Potter was fourth at 145 with a 2-2 record, his wins coming by pin and a 12-4 major decision.

Also scoring team points was Bryce Hockenson, who finished the invite fifth at 195 pounds.

W-G did not have an entrant at 113 pounds.

The next action for W-G will be Tuesday when they join Colfax-Mingo and Perry for a quadrangular at Ogden. The Hawks will then return to Ogden Saturday to compete in the Bulldog Tournament.
