Perry Police Department Officer Joshua Moore, left, and former Perry Officer Lourdes Clay, now a member of the Des Moines Police Department, were among the many teams of shoppers scanning the retail aisles in Saturday's annual Shop with a Cop program.

Perry-area peace officers — plus firefighters and paramedics — converged Saturday for the annual Shop with a Cop program in Perry, in which public safety personnel share the hope of Christmas with local children and families in need.

Perry Police Department Dispatcher Joey Loewen, who coordinated this year’s shopping spree, said the program aims to provide about $125 dollars to each family selected. Children team up with “cop shoppers” at Perry businesses and purchases Christmas gifts for their families.

The children must first purchase something for everyone in their household, and then they can purchase something for themselves, Loewen said. All of the presents are then taken to the Perry Elementary School and wrapped for Christmas morning.

No official word on the number of dollars raised and number of children taken shopping is available at this hour, but large numbers of shopping teams were seen at Ben’s Five and Dine, Shopko and the Dollar General Store.
