Jawanza Atima Curtis, 43, of Waukee was arrested Sunday on a charge of first-offense domestic abuse assault-bodily injury or mental illness and on a Dallas County warrant for failure to appear on an original charge of fourth-degree criminal mischief.

A Waukee man was arrested on an assault charge Sunday morning after allegedly cutting his ex-wife’s ear in the course of an argument.

Jawanza Atima Curtis, 43, of 780 S.E. Jonas Circle, Waukee, was charged with domestic abuse assault-bodily injury or mental illness and arrested on a Dallas County warrant for failure to appear on an original charge of fourth-degree criminal mischief.

The incident began about 11:30 a.m. Sunday in the 400 block of Jonas Circle in Waukee, where officers of the Waukee Police Department responded to a report of a domestic disturbance.

The female victim told the officers “that her baby daddy came to her house,” and he allegedly “got mad at her and grabbed a pair of scissors from the house and cut her left ear with them,” according to court records.

The victim told officers that she fell to the ground and screamed, according to court records. She said that her son then came out of the house and into the garage, where the alleged assault occurred, and called the police.

Curtis told the officers “that he and his ex were having a verbal fight, and it was not physical,” according to court records.

Officers observed on the victim “a small cut” on her “left ear that was bleeding,” according to court records. She was examined by Waukee EMS but refused further medical treatment.

Curtis is held in the Dallas County Jail on a $4,000 cash or surety bond. He is scheduled for a preliminary hearing June 14 in Dallas County District Court.
