As a way to celebrate the first day of school in the Perry Community School District, more than 35 retired teachers assembled Monday for their annual “We Don’t Have to Go Back to School” brunch at the Hotel Pattee.
The event started as small coffees to assure the newly retired they were not alone on the first day of school and has become an annual event whose numbers continue to grow.
After a social session and brunch, a short program followed. Those attending shared news of their joys and concerns and were encouraged to join Dallas County Area Retired School Personnel so they could see each other on a regular basis.
The educators welcomed several newcomers to their numbers this year: Sandy Burris, Dee Cole and RoseMarie Navarro.
The group also heard from fellow retired teacher Linda Andorf, who is running for a spot on the Perry Community School District Board of Directors. They were treated to a poem by Sue Leslie that shared things to do with all of your time. Florence Heck was recognized as the eldest member of the group.
This year’s event was coordinated by Marjean Gries and Sue Leslie.
My family and I just ate at the Hotel Pattee while spending a night there on a trip back to Iowa!
