Weary Ramblers warm hearts in Perry Fine Arts show Sunday

The Weary Ramblers brought their brand of country folk to the Perry Fine Arts concert series Sunday at the Perry Performing Arts Center, performing their well-wrought songs for about 150 grateful listeners.

The musical due of Kathryn Severing Fox and Chad Elliott plainly drew on years of experience as singer-songwriters in crafting their original songs. Elliott plays acoustic guitar and harmonica, and Severing Fox plays the fiddle, viola, mandolin and piano, and their harmonize sweetly on vocals.

The Weary Ramblers formed in 2022, and their recent self-titled album spent seven weeks at the top of the Contemporary Folk Album charts.

Chad Elliott, who is also a painter, is a singer-songwriter, playing acoustic guitar in the folk, Americana and blues music scene. He grew up in Iowa, lived in Texas and California and then returned to Iowa about 20 years ago. He has performed at dozens of venues in the Midwest, writes original music and has recorded several albums. During the pandemic, he recorded livestream painting videos put to music.

Kathryn Severing Fox played viola before switching to the violin. She won the DownBeat award, a prestigious jazz education award, and was a Henry Mancini Institute Fellow, and she has played with Celtic, Jam Grass and other bands and pursued many solo endeavors throughout her career. She teaches lessons, including the piano, and she also tunes pianos.

The Perry Fine Arts concerts are free and open to all. Donations are accepted. The Perry Performing Arts Center is handicapped accessible. Upcoming Perry Fine Arts concerts at the PAC include a Sunday, Feb. 16 performance by Jack Doty and the Swensongs, and on Sunday, March 16 the Greater Des Moines Community Band will play. The Heartland Youth Choir will appear Sunday, May 18.
