A West Des Moines man was arrested Monday afternoon after allegedly assaulting a West Des Moines woman who prevented his driving drunk.
Johnny Marvell Williams, 36, of 6419 Vista Dr., West Des Moines, was charged with first-offense domestic abuse assault and first-offense OWI.
The incident began about 4:15 p.m. Monday outside a convenience store in the 5900 block of Ashworth Road in West Des Moines, where officers of the West Des Moines Police Department responded to a report of a disturbance.
The officers made contact with the victim, who told the officers that when she “took the keys out of the vehicle that” Williams was in, he allegedly “grabbed the victim by the arm and attempted to get the keys back from her” and in so doing “partially knocked the glasses off of the victim’s face,” according to court records.
Williams allegedly “showed signs of impairment” while performing standard field sobriety tests for the offices, and he “admitted to drinking,” according to court records. A preliminary breath test result showed him “over the legal limit.”
Williams was held in the Dallas County Jail prior to his release on his own recognizance. He is scheduled for a preliminary hearing March 28 in Dallas County District Court.
Williams was convicted of assault in 2019 in Warren County District Court. He was convicted of assault on persons in certain occupations in 2021 in Woodbury County District Court.
