West Des Moines man allegedly backhands fiancee

Benjamin Viktor Helling, 24, of West Des Moines was arrested Saturday on a charge of first-offense domestic abuse assault-bodily injury or mental illness.

A West Des Moines man was arrested Saturday night after allegedly twice striking his girlfriend in the face with the back of his hand.

Benjamin Viktor Helling, 24, of 5608 Pommel Place, West Des Moines, was charged with first-offense domestic abuse assault-bodily injury or mental illness.

The incident began about 11:45 p.m. Saturday in the 4400 block of 142nd Street in Urbandale, where officers of the Urbandale Police Department responded to a report of a domestic disturbance.

The victim told the officers that Helling “yelled at the victim” and allegedly “assaulted her by using the back of (his) hand across the victim’s left side of her face two times,” according to court records.

Witnesses reported seeing “a bloody nose on the victim,” according to court records.  Helling “denied the assault occurred.”

Both Helling and the victim “live together, have been in an intimate relationship for over four years and are currently engaged to be married,” according to court records.

Helling was held in the Dallas County Jail prior to posting a $1,000 cash or surety bond. He is scheduled for a preliminary hearing April 14 in Dallas County District Court.

Helling was convicted of assault and first-degree harassment in 2016 in Polk County District Court.
