A West Des Moines man allegedly assaulted his wife Sunday night, including strangling her into unconsciousness.

Belal Luaibi, 28, of 6500 E. P. Tru Parkway, West Des Moines, was charged with domestic abuse assault impeding air/blood flow causing bodily injury, false imprisonment and first-offense domestic abuse assault-bodily injury or mental illness.

The incident began about 8:45 p.m. in the 6500 block of E. P. Tru Parkway, where officers of the West Des Moines Police Department responded to a report of a disturbance.

The victim told the officers that “she was thrown onto the bed” and Luaibi “jumped on top of her (to) cover her mouth with his hands,” according to court records.

The victim said that “she lost consciousness during the interaction” and when she woke up, Luaibi was “still on top of her.”

The officers observed on the victim “a small laceration to her upper lip,” which she said was from Luaibi’s “holding his hand over her mouth,” according to court records.

Luaibi allegedly told the officers that “he threw the victim onto the bed” and “did place his hand over the victim’s mouth in an attempt to ‘shut her up,'” according to court records.

Luaibi had a laceration on his hand, which he said was from the victim’s teeth when he was covering her mouth.

Luaibi is held in the Dallas County Jail in advance of an initial appearance in Dallas County District Court.
