West Des Moines man arrested for allegedly assaulting girlfriend

Dontrell Djontae Coaty, 23, of West Des Moines was arrested Saturday on a charge of first-offense domestic abuse assault-injury or mental illness.

A West Des Moines man was arrested Saturday afternoon after allegedly assaulting his girlfriend in their shared apartment.

Dontrell Djontae Coaty, 23, of 8601 Westown Parkway, #5211, West Des Moines, was charged with first-offense domestic abuse assault-injury or mental illness.

Th incident began when officers of the West Des Moines Police Department responded about 5:15 p.m. Saturday to a report of a domestic disturbance.

According to court records, Coaty “was witnessed grabbing the victim’s chin, pushing her to the ground and open-hand hitting her in the face.”

The victim allegedly had “red marks on her chin and chest” and “scratch marks on her forearms and blood in her mouth and lip,” according to court records.

Coaty and the victim were described as “boyfriend and girlfriends and are living together.”

Coaty is held in the Dallas County Jail on a $1,000 cash or surety bond. He is scheduled for a preliminary hearing April 15 in Dallas County District Court.

*A criminal charge is merely an accusation, and the defendant is presumed innocent until and unless proven guilty.
