A West Des Moines man was arrested Sunday morning after he allegedly physically and sexually assaulted his wife and gave his infant a bloody nose.

Jose Manuel Gonzalez-Cango, 31, of 8602 Westown Parkway, West Des Moines, was charged with second or subsequent offense third-degree sexual assault, first-offense domestic abuse assault-bodily injury or mental illness, child endangerment-bodily injury and obstruction of emergency communications.

The incident began about 2:45 a.m. Sunday in the 8600 block of Westown Parkway, where officers of the West Des Moines Police Department responded to a report of a domestic disturbance in which a 911 caller said, “My husband is hitting me,” before the line went dead.

Gonzalez-Cango was “attempting to leave the apartment” when the officers arrived, and he was “brought back inside where he could be questioned by a Spanish-speaking officer,” according to court records.

The officers made contact with the victim, who told the officers that she was allegedly “struck several times by” Gonzalez-Cango, “causing her to have ‘ringing’ in her ear,” according to court records.

The officers observed that the victim’s “left ear was noticeably red” and she had “red marks on her chest,” which the victim said occurred during the assault.

The victim told the officers that during the alleged physical assault against her, Gonzalez-Cango also “tried to sexually assault her” and “pulled her pants down and inserted one of his fingers into her,” according to court records.

The victim told the officers that she was holding “their 6-month-old shared child” during the alleged assault, and “the child was struck during this assault, causing a bloody nose to the 6-month-old,” according to court records.

The officers observed “dry blood in the infant’s right nostril,” according to court records.

The victim showed the officers a cell phone that “had been smashed and thrown in the garbage” by Gonzalez-Cango after the victim used the phone to call 911, according to court records.

Gonzalez-Cango is held in the Dallas County Jail on a $15,000 cash or surety bond. He is scheduled for a preliminary hearing Feb. 8 in Dallas County District Court.
