Wildcats top Panthers in regular season finale

PANORA — West Central Valley avenged a 44-0 loss last season with a come-from-behind 26-14 victory over Panorama Friday.

Panorama (3-6 overall, 1-6 in Class 1A District 6) held a 14-0 lead in the second quarter, but WCV (3-6, 2-5) rallied to close to within 14-13 at the half before pulling away with two second half touchdowns.

Neither team scored in the first period, but Luke South put the hosts on the board first with a 13-yard scamper early in the second quarter. He added a four-yard TD pass to Blaine Barber minutes later, with Gracen Welburg booting both PAT kicks for a 14-0 Panther lead.

The Wildcats answered when Carson Wadle found Cole Arnburg for a 70-yard scoring play to halve their deficit to 14-7. Brock Wolfe broke free for a 39-yard score before the intermission, but the PAT kick failed, leaving the hosts with a 14-13 lead at the break.

The Wadle-Arnburg connection struck for a 27-yard TD in the third frame as WCV seized a 20-14 lead. Wadle’s 16-yard dash in the fourth quarter pushed the Wildcat lead to 26-14 and was the last scoring of the game.

Wadle was 7-20-1 for 170 yards and two TDs through the air, with Arnburg (2-97, 2 TDs), William Larsen (3-48), Wolfe (1-21) and Kaleb Badker (1-4) catching passes.

Both teams ran the ball 32 times, with WCV gaining 202 yards and Panorama 145. Wolfe (14-120, 1 TD) and Wadle (7-46, 1 TD) paced the Wildcats, with Brice Sechrist (4-19), Zac Mann (6-18) and Cole Sackett (1, minus-1) also carrying the ball.

Sackett made 11.5 tackles, including a pair of sacks. Riley Algreen returned an interception for six yards and Korbin Nourse fell on a fumble for the WCV defense.

South had 93 yards and a score on 16 carries to lead the hosts. Gunnar Grunsted (9-23), Conner Meinecke (3-17), Blaine Barber (3-10) and Trey Cobb (1-2) also toted the pigskin.

South was 11-26-1 for 78 yards and a TD through the air while Welberg tossed one incompletion. Barber (8-54), Alias Stahl (1-12), Welberg (1-7) and Meinecke (1-5) were the receivers for the Panthers.

Conner Powell had 10 tackles, including a sack and a stop for loss, to pace the Panther defense. Cobb and Grunsted each had 5.5 tackles, with the latter making one tackle behind the line of scrimmage. Powell and Cobb each recovered a fumble, with Spencer Hunt making an interception.
