A new private lands wildlife specialist has joined the staff of the Conservation Districts of Iowa (CDI). Wildlife biologist Julia Clymer will work out of the CDI’s Jefferson field office and serve the interests of wildlife on private lands in Guthrie, Carroll, Greene, Boone and Dallas counties.

The CDI is the state-level organization representing Iowa’s 100 county-level Soil and Water Conservation Districts. The local districts administer federal and state funding for a variety of voluntary conservation programs for landowners, such as the Conservation Reserve Enhancement Program, the Integrated Farm and Livestock Management Program and other watershed and water quality protection programs encouraging use of buffer strips, cover crops and wetlands.

Along with a B.S. degree in biology from Grinnell College, Clymer comes with considerable background knowledge of Iowa’s land and wildlife. She previously worked for the Iowa Department of Natural Resources as an AmeriCorps assistant in the revision of Iowa’s Wildlife Action Plan.

Clymer’s other field work has included collecting habitat measurements and conducting wildlife surveys with Iowa State University and with WEST Inc., an environmental and statistical consulting service. She also helped create high-quality wildlife habitat on Cane Trust property.

“We are excited to be able to put staff in the field offices, and we are committed to their success,” said Claire Lindahl, CDI executive director. “Julia will be a real asset to our efforts.”

The native of Waukon, Iowa, is comfortable conversing with private landowners and will actively contribute to public outreach and education efforts, Lindahl said. Clymer will be an employee of the CDI through a partnership with the Iowa Department of Natural Resources and the Natural Resources Conservation Service.

Clymer began work in her new position Nov. 4.
