Wins continue to mount for W-G cagers

STUART — Woodward-Granger collected a pair of WCAC road wins Tuesday, with the Hawk girls topping host West Central Valley, 47-41, while the W-G boys walked over the Wildcats, 74-13.

W-G (12-2, 8-1) had to fight off a pesky WCV (7-5, 4-3) for the win in the opener, with the Hawks (12-1, 8-1) jumping out to a 23-2 first quarter lead in dispatching the Wildcats (1-12, 0-8).

Emma Anderson led the W-G girls with 14 points while Finley Fitzgerald provided 11 points. Katelyn Scharlau had seven points, Darby Nixon six, Natalie Helbling four, Quinn Kaufman three and Mae Anderson two.

The win gives the Hawks 12 victories for the first time since the 2014-2015 season.

Sydney Neal had 12 points for WCV, with Michaela Jaeger adding 11 points and Madelyn Jaeger nine. Isabella Munoz had four points, Jenna Merical three and Presley Pivonka two for the hosts.

W-G had crushed visiting WCV, 80-9, in their Dec. 13 boys meeting and were untested in the rematch. The Hawks led, 43-6, at the half, and entered the fourth quarter owning a 59-11 lead.

Bryce Achenbach’s 16 points were a game-high, with Alex Bice chipping in 14 points and Nick Buch 10. Seven points from both Pacey Moats and Reese Jamison, six apiece from Kaya Bowlsby and Keith Braunschweig, four from Trevor Simmons and two each from Jack Grell and Walker Deputy capped the W-G scoring.

Carson Powell had nine points, Jake Egger two and Hunter Keller two for the hosts.

W-G hosts Van Meter Thursday and Ogden Friday in a pair of WCAC twin bills.
