The National Weather Service office in Des Moines has issued a winter storm warning until 6 p.m. Sunday for the Perry area and parts of southwest and south-central Iowa.
Heavy snow is forecast, with snowfall rates of 1 to 2 inches per hour possible overnight. Total snow accumulations of 6 to 8 inches are expected, with most snowfall Saturday night. Locally higher accumulations are possible.
The moderate to heavy snow will taper off to lighter snow through much of Sunday. Winds will be relatively light, and primary impacts will be snow-covered and slick roads.
The NWS warns that travel could be very hazardous or impossible, with visibility reduced to less than one mile at times. If you must travel, keep an extra flashlight, food and water in your vehicle in case of an emergency.
