A Wisconsin man was arrested on drug charges early Tuesday on U.S. Interstate 80.

Mark Anthony Samual Berkebill, 60, of 89 Hosmer St., Marinette, Wisconsin, was charged with controlled substance violation and failure to affix drug stamp.

The incident began about 4:15 a.m. Friday on eastbound U.S. Interstate 80 near the Grand Prairie Parkway exit in Waukee, where an officer of the Waukee Police Department made a traffic stop on a 2021 Toyota Camry that was allegedly “following a pickup too closely,” according to court records.

The officer made contact with the driver, Berkebill, whom the officer soon suspected of “being deceptive in his travel plans, including when he left his home for his destination, when he left his destination and how long he had been at this location,” according to court records.

Berkebill’s admission to the officer that there was “a THC vape pen in the door of his vehicle” prompted a probable-cause search of the vehicle, which disclosed “30.428 pounds of marijuana in two separate duffle bags in the trunk of the vehicle,” according to court records.

Berkebill is held in the Dallas County Jail on a $10,000 cash or surety bond. He is scheduled for a preliminary hearing Jan. 24 in Dallas County District Court.

  1. Never, ever answer an officer’s questions. Merely inform him that your travel plans are not his/her business. Nor give them permission to search. I hope he hires a good lawyer because this is the modern-day equivalent of small-town speed traps to make money off of travelers. Did we hire Barney Fife’s grandkids? Are these stops really needed, or could they actually look for real speeders or other real safety issues that would make our interstates a safer drive? Following too closely . . . Sure he was . . . Want to bet there is no videotape?

  2. I’m not one to put capitalism and free enterprise down. I’m just thinking these folks need to find alternate routes. Maybe they should consider turning north at Redfield and hitting 141 from here.
