WEBSTER CITY — A 40-39 win over host and Class 2A No. 5 Webster City served as a highlight for the Woodward-Granger wrestlers as they tallied a 2-2 mark in action at the Dick Kennedy Duals Saturday.

Class 3A No. 1 Southeast Polk scored a 70-4 win over W-G, with Clear Lake posting a 43-24 victory. W-G topped Pocahontas Area, 57-24, and the host Lynx, 40-39.

The two teams were tied at 39-all, sending the overall decision to criteria. Both W-G and Webster City had five wins by fall, two by technical fall and two from major decisions, sending the overall deciding factor to points scored — where the teams were tied as well. That brought the outcome to near-falls, which favored the Hawks, giving W-G the upset.

The singular individual moment came at 195 pounds when a pair of second-ranked sophomores met for a battle of titans, with W-G’s Cody Fisher second in 2A and Gabe Christensen second in 3A for Southeast Polk. With all eyes watching, Fisher dominated from the beginning moments, powering to an 11-3 major decision.

Senior Austin Scharlau (152) was one of six Hawks to finish the day 2-2. Scharlau, who joined the career 100-win club with a victory Tuesday added two more victories to his prep total Saturday, both coming by pin fall.

Cole Carman (145) was 2-2 with a tech fall and a forfeit with Cale Pritchett (170) 2-2 behind a pin and a decision. Dillon Fogarty (220) and Tyler Lawrenson (285) were both 2-2 with a pin and a forfeit apiece while Ryan Munoz was 2-2 with both wins at 120 pounds coming via forfeit.

Hunter Pierce (106) recorded a major decision to finish 1-3, with Dilynn Lewiston (113) receiving a forfeit as he finished 1-3 as well.

Payton Tague (126), Jay Dorenkamp (138) and Kade Polich (182) were all also in action for the Hawks, but none of the trio were able to come up with a victory.

W-G is off until Thursday, when they will join Bondurant-Farrar for a triangular at Ballard. They will then compete in the WCAC tournament Saturday, with AC/GC serving as host.
