The W-G girls swatted six doubles to help capture a 9-7 WCC win over host Van Meter in eight innings Tuesday.

CENTERVILLE — The long drive back to Woodward Saturday was not as lively as the Hawk softball team would no doubt have preferred, as Wayne, Pella and Centerville handed W-G losses of 6-2, 9-4 and 4-3 in the Redette Classic.

Wayne jumped to a 5-0 lead in the opening game for W-G, but the Hawks scored twice in the bottom of the fifth to close the gap. Annie Webb scored on a Kaycee Major double, with Major driven home by Miranda Aunspach.

Wayne scored once in the sixth to push the score to 6-2, where it remained.

Alison Aunspach had the only other hit for W-G, with Bree Lesch drawing the only walk off Flacon freshman Haylee Fortune, who struck out six in gaining the win.

Riley Jamison suffered the loss after yielding six runs (three earned) on 10 hits and six walks. She had six strikeouts in the setback.

Pella plated five runs in the first frame of W-G’s second game, with two runs in the bottom of the third lifting the Dutch to a 7-0 lead.

The Hawks pushed three runs across the plate in the fourth and one more in the seventh, but single tallies from the Dutch in their halves of the fourth and sixth helped secure their 9-4 victory.

Errors plagued the Hawks as five of the nine runs charged to Jamison were unearned. The sophomore allowed four hits while walking four and striking out one.

Lesch and Meagan Bandstra each had two hits, with Jamison adding a double and Major a base hit. Bandstra drove in two runs, with Webb and Major also plating runs. Jamison walked and Bandstra stole two bases, with Lesch, Bandstra, Webb and Anna Tague scoring for W-G.

Centerville scored once in the bottom of the fifth to tie W-G at 3-all, then added the winning run in their next at-bat to slip away with a 4-3 win.

Seven Hawks had hits in the loss, with Lesch swatting a double while driving in two runs, with Jamison collecting the other RBI. Webb, Soelberg and Carli Major drew bases-on-balls, with Kendra Husmann and Carli Major each stealing a base while the latter scored twice and Jamison once.

Alissa Smeltzer tossed 3.2 innings of three-hit ball, allowing two runs on three walks. The loss went to Kaycee Major in relief. She threw 2.1 frames, yielding two runs on three hits and two walks while fanning one.

Leah Scott was in the ring for 5.2 innings for the hosts, surrendering three runs on six hits and two walks. The win went to Libby Sebolt with 1.1 innings of scoreless relief during which time she walked one batter.

W-G hosts Southwest Valley tonight before visiting Van Meter Tuesday and Ogden Thursday.
