DES MOINES — The Iowa Newspaper Association panel of sportswriters voted Woodward-Granger senior outfielder Race Brant to their Class 2A All-State First Team Sunday.
Brant, a Third Team pick as a junior, was 36-of-83 (.434) at the plate this season and finished with an on-base percentage of .530 while scoring 31 runs and driving in 14 from his lead-off spot in the Hawk lineup. He had four doubles, three triples and three home runs and finished 21-of-24 in attempted stolen bases. A tough out, Brant struck out just seven times in 111 total plate appearances.
He leaves W-G as the school record holder in runs scored (105), bases stolen (83) and career hits (135).
Brant was the lone player from the West Central Conference to earn First Team honors. Van Meter seniors Zach Forret and Jake Koch were Second Team choices at First Base and Outfield, respectively, with fellow Bulldog senior Kyle Schmitt a Third Team choice at pitcher. Also on the Third Team at pitcher was senior Nick Fox of WCC member Des Moines Christian.
Woodward-Granger is coached by Eric Evans. The Hawks finished 15-12 overall and 12-6 in WCC play this season.
