Woodward-Granger student passes away Monday morning

DES MOINES — Woodward-Granger junior Drew Jacobson, 16, died Monday morning at Mercy Medical Center in Des Moines.

Jacobson, a 6’3″, 230-pound forward on the Hawk basketball team, collapsed Dec. 2 during a practice at the school. Emergency personnel arrived on scene within mere minutes, and Jacobson was taken by air ambulance to Mercy Hospital in Des Moines.

Doctors revealed he was suffering from acute congestive heart failure and that he had suffered at least one incident of cardiac arrest.

Once hospitalized, Jacobson was placed in a medically induced coma in the pediatric intensive care unit while a bypass machine worked to try and allow his heart and lungs to heal. He had not been placed on life support.

A popular student at W-G, Jacobson, or “Moose” as he was affectionately known, had earned First Team All-District honors in football this season as an offensive tackle.

Go-Fund-Me account has been established to help raise funds for his father, Russ, and the Jacobson family. As of 4:30 p.m. over 350 donors have raised in excess of $15,000 in Drew’s memory.
