VAN METER — Places and points were at a premium Thursday at the Class 2A District 8 meet in Van Meter. Woodward-Granger scored just 22 points in the girls competition, with the Hawk boys limited to 20 points.
Ten of the W-G boys points came from senior Johnnie Morgan’s victory in the 800 run. Morgan crossed in 2 minutes, 2.24 seconds to become the only athlete that will represent W-G at the state meet this season. He is the 10th seed and will run in a timed final at 10:30 a.m. May 21.
The 1600 medley foursome of Tanner Vermaas, J.P. Nixon, Chandler Cavanaugh and Ian Thompson was third in 3:57.15, with Thompson, Nixon, Morgan and Josh Saak running to sixth place in the 4×800 in 8:59.79.
Also scoring for the W-G boys was the 4×400 unit of Morgan, Cavanaugh, Vermaas and Nixon that crossed in 3:46.88.
Josie Noland posted the highest individual finish for the Hawk girls when she ran the 400 in 1:05.59. Kaitlyn Peters was fifth in both the 800 (2:38.06) and the 1500 (5:33.66), with Savannah David sixth in the 400 low hurdles (1:19.96).
Peters, Noland, Regan Kaufman and Anna Tague teamed to place fourth in the 4×800 in 10:44.59, with the quartet of Maddi Anderson, Ashlyn Soelberg, Tague and Kaufman eighth in the distance medley in 5:01.52.
