WOODWARD — Three Hawk grapplers finished 5-0 Saturday to help power host Woodward-Granger to a second-place team finish in the annual Dennis Field Invitational.

Southeast Warren won the team crown, with W-G second and East Union third. West Central Valley was fourth, with Colfax-Mingo and Martensdale-St. Marys completing the six-squad bracket.

W-G senior Race Brant finished 5-0 at 152 pounds and was joined in posting a perfect mark by 182-pound junior Tanner Vermaas and 160-pound sophomore Austin Scharlau.

Hunter Pierce (106 pounds) was 4-1 for the Hawks, as was Ryley Saxton (126). Ty Turner (113) was 3-2, Colt Palmer (120) 3-1, Cole Carman (132) 3-2, and Jordan Pierce (145) 3-2.

Partial junior varsity results revealed Tae Calderon (JV, 113) posting a 1-0 mark along with Travis Schieltz (JV, 145), with Gabe Yingst (JV, 132) 2-3 while Aaron Sperling (170), Griffen Gibbons (JV, 195) and Jacob Kepfrod (195) also collected wins.

W-G opened with a 52-30 win over East Union before downing M-SM, 60-22, and Colfax-Mingo, 60-21. The Hawks slipped past WCV, 39-33, but could not fend off Southeast Warren, falling 45-30. The team is now 8-1 in dual action.

Brant rolled to 5-0 with a pins against Will Dunsbergen (C-M) and Dalton Lovell (SW), both coming in 58 seconds. He also received three forfeits.

Vermaas was handed two forfeits. He scored an 18-5 major decision against Beau Boswell (EU) and recorded pinfall victories over both Reese Arndt (C-N) and Alan Wallace (WCV), the former coming in 70 seconds and the latter in 54 ticks.

Scharlau’s run began with two forfeits. He then pinned Marshall Maple of C-M in 2:45, seized a 7-5 Sudden Victory (1) win against Carson Wadle of WCV and stuck Kaleb Marois (SW) in 1:51.

Carmen had two wins by fall for the hosts, with Saxton, Sperling, Yingst and Turner also recording varsity pins.

W-G is scheduled to visit Guthrie Center tonight and Ogden Thursday before competing in the Ogden Duals Saturday. See below for additional photos and a video from the Field Invite.
